On Sunday, May 1, a post on Facebook of an individual making threats of violence with a firearm caught the attention of Van Zandt County courthouse staff who in turn notified the Canton Police Department and the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office.
Following a 75-minute special called closed executive session May 9, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court unanimously announced the appointment of Joe Carter as VZC Interim Sheriff. Carter, the current Facilities Director for the VZC Courthouse and a former Head of Security for the VZC Courthouse, was chosen by the commissioners’ court from a field of 12 individuals, according to VZC Judge Don Kirkpatrick.
Property at Van Zandt County Wesley Chapel Cemetery has been damaged after an incident last week. Wesley Chapel Cemetery, located in Canton on Van Zandt County Road 2120 close to Wiley’s Gun Shop, is a Texas Historical Commission location, and the chapel on the property received significant damage.
Doc Collins, President of the Van Zandt County Republicans, released the following information regarding the April meeting of the VZC Republicans: The April Van Zandt County Republican Club meeting was a training session for the delegates who will represent the VZC Republican Club at the state convention in Houston in June. We not only had delegates from our county but also from the counties of Kaufman, Rains, Hopkins and Henderson.
Whitton Fire Department will host a fish fry at 5 p.m., May 14. The menu will include fried fish, French fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, Bobby beans, drinks and desserts. The Firehouse Band will be providing live music. All funds will benefit the fire department’s operating costs.
