Luce picks up 400th coaching victory

The Canton Eagles stayed busy last week, hitting the field three times over a five-day span. Canton would go 1-2 overall in those matchups, downing Mabank before coming up short against Van and Edgewood.

Canton’s offense came out firing in the first game of the week, hammering out eight hits and drawing three walks in a 10-5 win over the visiting Mabank Panthers.

The game was never much in doubt as Canton scored a run in the first, four in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth to stake themselves to a 9-0 lead.

Mabank managed to score a combined five runs over the game’s final three innings, cutting the final down to 10-5 in Canton’s favor.

Layne Etheridge got the start and win for Canton in the contest, allowing nine hits and two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings. Kaden Smith came on in relief, notching the game’s final out on a strikeout.

Ace Reese went 2/3 with a stolen base and two runs scored, Colton Whitehead went 2/3 with a stolen base and two runs scored, Layne Etheridge went 1/3 with 2 RBI, Reed Vannorsdel went 1/2 with a stolen base, an RBI and two runs scored, Creede Herchman went 1/2 with an RBI, Kaden Smith went 1/3 with a run scored and Brayden Norrell went 1/3 with an RBI in the Eagle victory.

In addition to being a critical district win, the triumph over the Panthers served as the 400 th coaching win of Coach Brandon Luce’s career.

Van made the short trek to Van April 22, renewing their rivalry with the Vandals in another key district matchup. Van would come away victorious, surging late with 11 runs over the final three innings to post a 12-6 win.

Reed Vannorsdel got the starting nod for Canton, finishing with no decision after allowing six hits and an earned run over four innings. Kaden Smith allowed three unearned runs over 2/3 innings pitched, and Ace Reese allowed four hits and four runs over 1 1/3 innings.

Colton Whitehead went 2/4 with a double, 2 RBI and two runs scored, Ace Reese went 1/2 with a home run, an RBI and three runs scored, Jaxon Rhyne went 1/4 with an RBI, Layne Etheridge went 1/4 and Creede Herchman drove in a run in three trips to the plate.

Canton returned home to face off against Edgewood April 23, falling behind early in a 4-1 setback to the Bulldogs.

Peyton Stewart went the distance on the mound for Canton in the contest, allowing two hits and three runs.

Layne Etheridge went 1/2 with a double, Creede Herchman went 1/2, Cannon Valenzuela went 1/3 with a run scored, Colton Whitehead went 1/3 and Ace Reese went 1/4 with an RBI.

The Eagles, now 4-5 in District 14-4A play, was scheduled to wrap up the regular season on the road against Brownsboro April 26.
