Members of the Captain James Burleson Chapter, US Daughters of 1812, and the James Pinckney Henderson Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, met in Canton July 23.

The theme was “Flags Galore!”

Carrie Anne Wilson-Woolverton spoke about the Flag of 1812 and flags during the Republic of Texas, and Tom Clinkscales provided the program on the flags of the Confederacy.

Other topics included talks by Patricia Thibodeau who spoke on Elvira Engledow, a real daughter of a veteran of the War of 1812, Citizen of the Republic of Texas and early settler of the Free State of Van Zandt; and Merle Howard, District IV Representative DRT.

Patricia Thibodeau, Honorary President of the John Cavet Chapter USD1812, presented the Anchor Awards to Sherrie Archer and Carrie Woolverton in appreciation for their assistance during her term as chapter president.

The United States Daughters of 1812 was founded in 1892 and is a women’s volunteer service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving and increasing knowledge of the history of the American people by the preservation of documents and relics, marking of historic spots, recording of family histories and traditions, celebration of patriotic anniversaries, teaching and emphasizing the heroic deeds of the civil, military, and naval life of those who molded this government between the close of the American Revolution and the close of the War of 1812.

Founded in 1891, the Daughters of The Republic of Texas is the oldest patriotic women’s organization in Texas and one of the oldest in the nation. The mission is to perpetuate the memory and spirit of those who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas; provide educational programs of the highest caliber in coordination with Texas school districts and the Texas Education Agency, as well as programs for the public; encourage research into early Texas records, preserve historic documents and encourage the publication of historic records and secure and memorialize historic sites.
